makan @ Alice's, Thornleigh

Caught up with my god sis last week over some comfort food since the weather hasn't quite made up it's mind. We wanted to go somewhere quite close to her place so she didn't have to travel as much. Poor thing has been overworked and having some personal issues too.

Spring rolls (4) - crisp fried vege roll served w sweet chilli sauce $7.50

To start, we shared the spring roll entree which was quite generous in terms of serving size (the picture doesn't do it justice, but we got 5 mouthfuls from each spring roll). These were freshly fried and very tasty.

Char Kway Teow - rice noodles in thick soy sauce w chinese sausage, seafood & chives $13.80

The CKT was filled with "wok air" and completely hit the spot. The dish was again generous in terms of portion size and ingredients. Lots of prawns and scallop pieces were found underneath all the char flavoured noodles. The only thing to improve this would be using fresh seafood rather than the frozen variety.

Soft Pork Ribs - fried soft pork ribs in a rich special sauce $17.80

Chef's recommendation of soft pork ribs tasted kind of like sweet and sour pork without the usual accompanying vegs such as capsicum and pineapple. I liked the flavour of this but it was quite filling and again, huge in serving size. Thankfully, we ordered some plain rice to go with it (the staff there are quite nice and honest, we were thinking of getting chicken or coconut rice but she insisted that the flavours of this dish is quite strong so plain would be a better option).

Pulut Hitam - sweet black glutinous rice dessert with a dash of coconut cream $5.50

Of course,  we both saved space for dessert when we spotted the Pulut Hitam on the menu. I know it takes a long time to make this at home, and I haven't quite perfected it yet. This version was quite good and a little too heavy handed on the coconut cream. Or it might be just me, but I prefer to taste more of the black glutinous rice :)

Overall, a solid menu with heaps of authentic dishes to offer. I am keen to come back and try their hainanese chicken rice.
